As a non-copywriter, I’m always looking for ways to make writing easier, faster, and beat that dreaded writer’s block. When I first heard about Jasper, I figured it might be a tool that would help me out with my writing. So, I decided to check it out and see if it was worth the hype.

Jasper AI is mainly intended as a creative content creating tool, rather than a fact-checking researcher. This doesn’t mean Jasper can’t write factual content. It does mean that you’ll need to both supply the facts you want to include as well as fact-check the final result. Since fact-checking and research are required for content creation anyway, I’m not counting this against Jasper.

Jasper AI is perfect for those of you who want to shift from being a content consumer to a content creator.

If you’re starting a new business and can’t hire a copywriter yet, or even if you’re great at writing but want to save time, Jasper.ai might be the tool for you.

Standard advice for new online businesses is to set up a website with a blog, and post like crazy on your social platform of choice. On top of that, you may be running an advertising strategy, or maybe you need to write compelling product descriptions for what you’re selling. Let’s not forget you’re also likely sending out emails, either newsletters or emails after someone purchases something from you.

In my experience working with both new and established small business owners, content creation in any form can be overwhelming due to the time and effort needed to create compelling content. How to use Jasper AI effectively for copywriting

This AI writing tool has over 50 templates to choose from, helping you create specific copy that’s formatted for things like a blog post intro paragraph, a blog post outline, an email subject line, ad copy and headlines, social posts and more.

You provide input criteria such as your topic, facts to include, who your audience is, the tone of voice you want and then let Jasper generate as many variations as needed. Using templates is a quick and easy way to build out the perfect piece of content you need, in a fraction of the time it would typically take.

The key to getting the most out of Jasper is knowing how it works. It’s not just a plug-and-play solution. If you want to use it well, you’ll need to invest a little time in learning how to use it properly.

The good news is that the learning curve isn’t steep. You don’t need prior experience in using computer-generated content, either. The software itself has helpful shortcuts and pro tips available through a button click on every page that you’re working on.

To make it easier for you to use Jasper.ai effectively, here are some of my best tips!  

1. Take advantage of the templates.

Do you know what topic you want to write about but have no idea what to write or how to format it? That’s okay! Take advantage of one of the 50+ templates provided by Jasper.ai and let the software do the hard work for you.

2. Pick your topics well.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how good your content is if you don’t have an audience that cares about what you’re saying. Your content won’t be effective if it isn’t relevant to your readership.

I recommend choosing a topic that you know your readers will already be interested in it. If you don’t know where to start, try tools such as answer the public, google autocomplete, or questions that your current readers and audience are already asking you. By choosing topics that are relevant to your readers, you’ll have more chance of growing your followers, too!

3. Take advantage of the Jasper AI Bootcamp (for free).

I highly recommend going through their Bootcamp. This is a roughly 45-minute training series that will get you familiar with how to navigate the platform and make the most out of your writing experience in the shortest possible time.

Remember… Be patient. As with any new tool that you start using, you may or may not see excellent results right away. The more you use Jasper and use their tips and bootcamp, the quicker you will see great results in both the copy generated for you by Jasper.ai and the time savings on your side for your content creation.

What are the benefits of using Jasper.ai?

Let’s talk benefits. Why would you want to use Jasper.ai for copywriting?

1. End writer’s block

As I mentioned in the review section, Jasper is a great cure to overcome writer’s block. When you’re without words and ideas, this tool can help you get your writing started again.

By using the templates for short copy, or even to brainstorm some blog post topic ideas, you can add your ideas as the input and let Jasper generate a few outputs for you. Usually, I’ll have something I love within the first or second try at most. Then I’ll tidy up a couple of things that I may want to phrase differently or add something as needed. And done!

By using the document editor for long-form content (available in Jasper Boss Mode), you’ll have even more flexibility.

How I like to use Jasper for long-form content is by providing a sentence, or the start of one, and then seeing what Jasper generates. I may regenerate once or twice, and then tweak and add more of my own, and keep going back and forth until my content is ready. You can even incorporate those templates mentioned above into the document editor for a supercharged writing experience all in one document.

2. Save time for yourself!

Let’s face it: we all want more time in our day to do the things we enjoy. Jasper helps me accomplish that by creating great content I never would have been able to come up with myself in such little time.

Prior to Jasper AI I’d an hour (or more, being totally honest) just brainstorming, writing, and editing blog posts, or working for hours on social media posts. Now, I can spend a fraction of that time on the same tasks, get great quality content, and then move on to other important tasks such as emailing my list, doing some outreach, or strategizing my next bit of content. Jasper boasts being able to help you publish content 5 times faster, and that’s been true for me so far.

3. Boost sales with better copy

It’s no secret that the words you choose to use affect how your potential customers see your brand. With Jasper.ai’s help, you can be sure that you’re using the right language and formatting to get the results you want. Jasper knows how to write PAS and AIDA frameworks, ad headlines and descriptions, product features, and more. Jasper can even turn features into benefits so that your customers can really connect emotionally with how your product will benefit them.

What are some of the features of Jasper.ai that you can use to improve your productivity?

1. Templates

If you’re short on time, need short copy, or just want some inspiration, start with the templates (aka copywriting skills) that Jasper has ready for you to use. These include templates for a variety of different headline types, video and article topic ideas, product descriptions, SEO title and meta descriptions for products, service pages, blog and web pages, unique value propositions, PAS and AIDA frameworks, video scripts and many more.

Jasper’s templates are super quick and easy to use. For example, choose your template. Next, you’ll need to provide the company or product name and some form of template-dependent context. When that’s done, click on the Generate AI content button. In just a few seconds – this part feels like magic to me – Jasper will present you with several options. All that’s left for you to do is review the content Jasper just wrote for you, pick what you like, copy-paste it into your own work, tweak it if and as needed, and you’re done!

2. Document Editor

This is where you can get more creative with what copy you want to use for your business, and with a longer-format copy output from Jasper AI. This is a handy tool to create blog posts, sales pages or emails for example.

You’ll have the option to add a title and content description or brief that you’d like Jasper to use when considering what content it writes. This is also where you can add a custom tone of voice and any keywords you’d like to use for this piece of content. Lastly, choose your desired output length of shorter (~20 – 25 words), medium (~50 – 55 words), or longer (~110 – 115 words).

Then click Compose and let Jasper get to work.

To start a new paragraph, I like to use the medium or longer output options. To wrap up a paragraph or sentence, I usually switch the output length to shorter.

I like to give Jasper extra guidance by starting with a sentence or a partial sentence. I’ll also tweak the output as needed as we go because for each time I click the compose button, Jasper will look back at the previous work for extra context.

This means most of my brainpower is going towards proofreading, tweaking and general editing rather than fully writing a new piece of copy from scratch.

Of course, using the document editor, you can still choose from many different templates while you’re in the document editor and easily add those outputs directly into your working document.

3. Jasper commands

Think of Jasper commands like commands you’ll give your smart home device, except specific to writing. 

For example, once you’ve written or copy-pasted some content into your document, you can tell Jasper to “write some persuasive bullets for the content above.”

There are no set commands that you have to follow, so you can give commands using plain English and Jasper will work to complete your command. Some commands may work better than others so don’t be afraid to play around with different commands to see which ones work best for you.

If you don’t know what to ask (or command) of Jasper, they even provide a list of command ideas to get you started.

4. SEO Mode

Even though Jasper has SEO templates, and you can enter keywords to use in the document editor, SEO mode kicks things up by 100 notches!

SEO mode will help you optimize articles to rank on Google by using the Surfer SEO integration. Surfer SEO is great for helping you optimize your article for any specific keywords you want to include and rank for.

Using SEO mode is a great way to combine Jasper with your SEO efforts in a fast, easy and user-friendly way. This is especially useful for when you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate on SEO research.

This is also useful if you’re not an expert, but you need help creating some SEO-friendly content.

5. Recipes

If you’ve ever followed a recipe when making a meal (or baking chocolate cake), you can be certain that if you follow the recipe step by step, you’ll get the results you want. That’s because a recipe is a series of repeatable instructions that you can follow to make that moist chocolate cake.

In much the same way, Jasper’s recipes are a set of repeatable instructions (like a workflow) to follow to get your desired outcome.

For example, if you want to write blog posts using the same format each time, you can use one of the example recipes to get started. Other example recipes include writing cold emails using the AIDA framework, creating a hero’s journey outline and even preparing a non-fiction book introduction and outline.

Recipes are a fantastic way to streamline your Jasper commands into a predetermined workflow, so that all you need to do is input your new topic each time and get properly formatted content out the other side. Example recipes are also a good reference tool to use to create your own recipes for your own working styles.

Recipes are probably my favourite tool to improve my productivity with Jasper, because it rolls so many of the amazing features together into a hyper-efficient workflow.

You can choose from either the Starter Plan or the Boss Mode Plan. I’m partial to Jasper Boss Mode, but the starter plan will also get you off to a great start.
